What Is UptimeRobot?

UptimeRobot is a cloud-based monitoring service that checks websites, APIs, servers and individual ports around the clock and automatically alerts you when something goes down. The service targets both single-site operators who just want to watch one website and teams that need to keep an eye on larger infrastructure.

The key difference from many competitors is the very generous free tier: the Free plan alone allows up to 50 monitors running in parallel, including a public status page and full API access. In our own test, an HTTP monitor for delavo.de was set up in under two minutes and immediately delivered reliable response-time and uptime data.

Core Features of UptimeRobot

The feature set covers the classic monitoring use cases, from simple availability checks to publicly communicating your own system status.

  • HTTP/S monitoring: Checks websites and web apps at a chosen interval for availability and status code.
  • Keyword monitoring: Also triggers an alert when a specific text is missing from, or unexpectedly appears on, the page – catching incompletely delivered pages that a pure status-code check would miss.
  • Ping and port monitoring: Monitors individual servers or services independent of HTTP.
  • Public status pages: Shows customers or users your current system status on a ready-to-use page.
  • Multi-channel notifications: Email, mobile apps and numerous integrations for team chat and ticketing tools (scope varies by plan, see below).
  • API access and MCP connector: A full REST API with documentation, plus an MCP connector that lets AI assistants connect directly to your account.
  • Tags: Freely assignable labels for organizing multiple monitors, e.g. by project or website.

Advantages of UptimeRobot

The biggest practical advantage is the ratio of setup effort to allowance: a working monitor is set up within minutes, and 50 free monitors are enough to watch several projects or subpages at once without ever needing a paid plan.

The public status page is already included in the Free plan and looks professional and clean in our test, including a privacy-friendly cookie banner with a “necessary cookies only” option. For operators who want to give their users transparency about their own availability, this is usable at no extra cost.

Also unusually generous is the free API access including an MCP connector for AI assistants – a detail rarely found in this scope on comparable free plans.

Who Should Use UptimeRobot?

UptimeRobot is aimed primarily at single-site operators, small teams, and anyone looking for straightforward, free basic monitoring for their website or infrastructure.

Single-site operators and small websites benefit most from the generous Free plan: 50 monitors, a keyword check in addition to plain uptime checking, and a public status page cover most needs of a single website completely, with no paid plan required.

Developers and technically minded users use the free API access and the MCP connector to feed monitoring data into their own dashboards or AI-driven workflows without needing a higher plan.

Small teams running production workloads typically use the Team plan to get shorter check intervals, several login seats, and integrations such as Slack, Zapier or PagerDuty, which are locked on the Free plan.

Less suitable is UptimeRobot for teams that need structured incident management with on-call escalation – for that, specialized tools like Better Stack are the better fit (see alternatives below).

Our UptimeRobot Review

UptimeRobot scores points with an unusually generous Free plan, a very short setup time, and free API/MCP access. Across the paid plans, SSL monitoring, maintenance windows, more integrations and shorter check intervals are added – this review assesses the overall product across all plans, not just the free entry tier. This assessment is based on our own hands-on test with a permanently active monitor for delavo.de.

Strengths

  • Setting up an HTTP monitor for delavo.de in under 2 minutes, including an automatically pre-filled email alert contact.
  • A very generous monitor allowance on the Free plan: 50 monitors, far more than a single project needs.
  • The free keyword monitor also catches incompletely delivered pages that a pure HTTP-200 check would miss.
  • A free, professional-looking public status page including a privacy-friendly cookie banner.
  • Free, documented API access plus an MCP connector for AI assistants – unusually generous for a free plan.
  • Freely assignable tags make it easy to organize things once more monitors are added.
  • A clear, affordable plan ladder unlocks SSL monitoring, maintenance windows, more monitor types and additional integrations like Slack or PagerDuty when needed.

Weaknesses

  • Trying to activate SSL checks surfaces a trial upsell modal that automatically renews into a paid annual subscription if not cancelled in time.
  • Incident management stays basic across all plans – there’s no structured on-call escalation system like in specialized tools.
  • Deep links into individual dashboard subpages sometimes don’t work reliably (404) – navigation has to happen within the app itself.
  • SOC 2 compliance and the claimed 4.7-star rating are provider statements, not independently verified in our test.
  • No publicly available, explicit GDPR contract documents were reviewed in our test (see the privacy section below).

Our Experience with UptimeRobot

For this test we used an existing Free account to set up a permanent monitor for delavo.de and systematically checked which of the features named in the feature list are actually usable for free – without any real purchase or upgrade, staying entirely within the free account scope.

Step 1: Setting Up a Monitor for delavo.de

“Create your first monitor” leads through a short onboarding checklist straight to the form. The URL, monitor type (HTTP/S) and friendly name (“delavo.de”) are filled in automatically, and the email alert contact was already pre-selected as the account’s default contact. The interval is fixed at 5 minutes on the Free plan.

Screenshot: Monitor list right after creation, status “Preparing…”

Step 2: First Check and Response Time

About one to two minutes after creation, UptimeRobot delivered the first check: status “Up” at a 927 ms response time. After a short observation period, the dashboard consistently showed 100% uptime for the last 24 hours, 7 days and 30 days.

Screenshot: Status “Up”, 927 ms response time, 100% uptime

Step 3: SSL and Domain Monitoring as a Plan Upgrade

The edit form visibly shows an “SSL certificate and Domain checks” section with toggles you can switch on. Clicking “Check SSL errors” opens an upgrade modal – the feature isn’t activatable on the Free plan and only becomes usable from the Solo plan onward. The detail page accordingly shows only “Unlock” instead of an expiry date.

Screenshot: Domain & SSL show only “Unlock” instead of a date

Step 4: Setting Up a Public Status Page

Under “Status pages”, the monitor could be added to a new status page called “Delavo Status” with a single click. The page is immediately live to the public, shows “All systems Operational” at 100% uptime, and carries a discreet footer note about UptimeRobot. A custom subdomain such as status.delavo.de is marked with a premium icon on the Free plan, however, and isn’t usable.

Step 5: Integrations Across Free and Business Tiers

Under “Integrations & API” we checked every single integration. Free to use on the Free plan are Discord, Google Chat, Splunk, the mobile apps, and Pushbullet/Pushover; the widely used business channels Slack, Telegram, generic webhooks, Mattermost, MS Teams, Zapier and PagerDuty are part of the paid plans.

UptimeRobot integrations: Slack, Telegram and others locked on the Free plan
Screenshot: Slack, Telegram, Webhook, Mattermost and MS Teams marked “Upgrade to access”

Step 6: API Access and MCP Connector

A pleasant surprise was the full, free API access with main and read-only API keys plus monitor-specific keys, including linked documentation. On top of that comes an MCP connector that lets AI assistants connect to the account in natural language – a concretely usable detail for an AI-adjacent project like delavo.de.

Step 7: Advanced Settings

In the edit form, we checked every advanced setting individually. “Slow response time alert” opens an upgrade modal – the feature belongs to the paid plans. Free to use on the Free plan, on the other hand, remain request timeout, IP protocol version and redirect behavior.

Step 8: A Second Monitor – Keyword Check as a Useful Addition

When choosing a monitor type for a new monitor, it becomes clear that HTTP, keyword, ping and port monitoring are free to use on the Free plan, while Cron/Heartbeat, DNS, API and UDP monitoring are part of the paid plans. We additionally set up a free keyword monitor on “ that fires an alert whenever this closing tag is missing from the response – a common way to catch incompletely delivered pages that a pure uptime check would miss.

Screenshot: Keyword monitor with logic “Start incident when keyword does not exist”

Step 9: Permanent Setup With Two Monitors and Tags

By the end of the test, both monitors – the HTTP/S monitor and the additional keyword monitor – run permanently in parallel, each tagged “delavo” and both showing status “Up”. That uses just 2 of the 50 available monitors, leaving plenty of room for further additions, for example on individual category pages.

Pricing in Detail

Compared with many other monitoring services, UptimeRobot is attractively positioned across its plans: the Free plan covers basic monitoring for a single project completely free with 50 monitors, and the Solo plan unlocks SSL/domain monitoring, a shorter check interval and maintenance windows at a moderate price.

If you only need to monitor a single website with basic uptime and keyword checks, the Free plan will serve you indefinitely. If you need SSL expiry monitoring, a shorter check interval, or scheduled maintenance windows without false alerts, you should realistically budget for at least the Solo plan.

ROI Calculation: When Is UptimeRobot Worth It?

The core value of uptime monitoring is catching an outage before customers or visitors notice it. Even UptimeRobot’s free plan fully covers this basic case for a single project like delavo.de: an HTTP monitor plus a keyword check run permanently and for free at a 5-minute interval.

Example calculation (simplified, without guarantee): If a website goes unnoticed for an hour, lost inquiries, clicks or revenue of relevant scale can result, depending on the business model. A free 5-minute check limits the maximum undetected downtime to a few minutes instead of hours – against a setup time of under two minutes.

An upgrade pays off in particular once you also need SSL/domain expiry monitoring, a shorter check interval, or maintenance windows without false alerts – these features are available from the Solo plan onward.

Our Verdict on UptimeRobot

UptimeRobot impresses in our test with very fast setup and a monitor allowance of 50 that is exceptionally generous for a free plan, complemented by free API access and an MCP connector for AI workflows. For simply monitoring a single website like delavo.de, the free plan holds up indefinitely.

Anyone who additionally needs SSL/domain expiry monitoring, scheduled maintenance windows, or a shorter check interval will find these features available from the Solo plan at a moderate price.

Verdict: Recommended for single-site operators, small websites and growing teams looking for a monitoring solution that scales with their needs – Second choice for teams that need structured incident management and on-call escalation.
