Our Experience with Pixlr

We tested Pixlr using a free account – no upgrade, no money spent. We reviewed the interface in both German and English, since Pixlr fully supports both languages.

Step 1: Free Account and Credit Balance

After signing up, the Free plan provides a one-off allowance of 10 AI credits – there’s no monthly top-up as with the paid tiers. We had to budget these 10 credits carefully across all the tests below.

Step 2: Removing a Background

The Background Remover is linked as a standalone free landing page and doesn’t require any credits. It works independently of the other AI features and was usable without restriction.

Step 3: AI Image Generation

Using the FLUX.2 Klein 9B model (1 credit per image, 1024×1024 px), we generated a robot mascot from a simple prompt – clean on the first try, with no noticeable artefacts.

Step 4: Prompt-Based Editing with the Generative Assistant

The “Generative Assistant” in the editor lets you change an image via a text prompt instead of manually marking areas. Using the prompt “replace the white background with a soft teal gradient” (FAST model, 1 credit), the background of our generated robot image was swapped cleanly without altering the subject itself.

Step 5: The Video Generator – the Reality of Free-Plan Pricing

This is where the limits of the Free plan become obvious: depending on the model, a single video clip costs between 72 and 250 credits – the cheapest model we found already exceeded our entire 10-credit starting balance. Generating a video simply wasn’t possible within this test without purchasing additional credits.

Step 6: Voice Output with the Audio Generator

Unlike video and music, text-to-speech at 8 credits was just about affordable within our starting balance. Using the MiniMax Speech 2.8 model with German selected as the language, we had a short sample text spoken aloud – the result was clearly understandable with no obvious pronunciation errors.

Step 7: AI Face Swap

Face Swap costs a relatively low 2 credits, but requires two uploaded photos (a face and a target image). For privacy reasons we did not use real photos of people for this test and only reviewed the interface without actually running the swap.
