What Is Buffer?

Buffer is a social media management tool for planning, scheduling and analyzing posts across several channels at the same time. Instead of managing each channel separately, a post is created once in the Buffer composer and distributed from there to Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Instagram and other networks – either with identical text or tailored to each network.

Alongside scheduling, Buffer adds an integrated AI assistant for writing copy, a cross-channel comment inbox (“Community”), its own link-in-bio page (“Start Page”) and deeper analytics in the paid plans. Buffer’s strength shows most in growing setups: channels, user accounts and API access can be added individually and transparently instead of being forced into rigid package sizes.

Core Features of Buffer

  • Multi-channel composer: Create one post for several networks at once; “Customize for each network” lets you write individual text per channel.
  • AI assistant: Prompt-based text generation directly in the composer, including editing options (rephrase, shorten, expand, make more casual).
  • Automatic link preview: Detects links in the text and automatically builds a preview card with image and description from the target page.
  • Flexible scheduling: Publish immediately, add to the queue, prioritize, or set a specific date and time.
  • Transparently scalable integrations: Additional channels can be added one by one, and the pricing model behind it is openly visible.
  • Insights/analytics: Metrics such as reactions, comments, engagement rate and impressions, with custom date ranges and extended history in the paid plans.
  • Community inbox: Comments from all connected channels come together in one shared inbox.
  • Start Page: Your own link-in-bio landing page with templates, built right inside Buffer.

Advantages of Buffer

Buffer’s biggest advantage is its transparent scaling: as you grow, you add individual channels, user accounts or API access as needed instead of paying for unused features at the next plan jump. The pricing logic behind it is openly visible at any time, not hidden in opaque enterprise quotes.

The content workflow convinces as well: the combination of composer, AI writing assistant and automatic link preview means you no longer add image and description by hand – Buffer pulls them from the meta data of the linked page. The paid plans add deeper analytics with custom date ranges and extended history – a reliable data basis for growing editorial teams.

Who Should Use Buffer?

Buffer is for anyone who wants to run social media channels regularly and predictably and who wants to grow in channel count and team size without switching platforms.

Growing teams and agencies benefit most from being able to add individual channels and user accounts transparently – costs grow predictably instead of in jumps.

Content creators and bloggers get a fast way to announce new content on several channels without writing separately for each one, thanks to the AI writing assistant and automatic link preview.

Solo freelancers and small businesses can start with the free plan for up to three channels and add individual features such as advanced analytics when needed, instead of needing a full package right away.

Less suitable for teams that need fixed approval processes from day one (the Team plan is required for that) and for anyone looking for an all-in-one solution with in-depth competitor analysis in the entry-level plan.

What sets Buffer apart from many competitors: additional channels, user accounts and API access can be added individually in Essentials and Team, and the costs are visible upfront. If you start with three channels and later grow to ten, you only pay for the capacity you actually need – a clear difference from vendors with rigid plan tiers.

Our Experience with Buffer

The setup was tested with an existing delavo.de account. The goal was to connect the channels Facebook, X and LinkedIn productively and to go through the most important features in full, including areas unlocked in the paid plans such as analytics and channel expansion.

Step 1: Connecting Channels

Facebook, X and LinkedIn could be connected one after another via “Connect a New Channel”. One oddity: the LinkedIn connection does not automatically ask for a company page – without a dedicated delavo LinkedIn page, the connection ran through an existing personal company page.

Step 2: First Impression of the Dashboard

After connecting all three channels, the dashboard immediately shows the status “3/3 channels connected”. Facebook posts published before the connection were imported automatically as history – a practical detail for a seamless start.

Step 3: A Post with Individual Text per Network

“Customize for each network” lets you prepare one post for several channels and still word it individually for each network – important for delavo.de, where X posts are written entirely in English, Facebook posts bilingually and LinkedIn posts in German.

Step 4: Testing the AI Assistant

The AI assistant first walks you through a short onboarding with self-disclosures (“no internet access”, “may occasionally provide inaccurate information”). After you enter a prompt, it returns a finished text suggestion with options to rephrase, shorten or expand it.

Step 5: Automatic Link Preview

As soon as a delavo.de URL is detected in the text, Buffer automatically adds a preview card with the image and description of the target page – no manual image upload needed.

Step 6: Analytics and Scaling Options

The insights view shows reactions, comments, engagement rate and impressions per period. Clicking “Custom” opens an upgrade notice: custom date ranges and extended analytics history belong to the paid feature set – as does the ability to add further channels individually and transparently instead of having to move to a larger package plan.

Step 7: Community Inbox

In the “Community” area, comments from all connected channels come together in one shared inbox. For X, a new “Mentions” feature was also available at the time of testing.

Step 8: Start Page as Link in Bio

“Create a Start Page” opens the editor for your own link-in-bio page with several templates to choose from – a building block that many competitors charge for separately.

The following gallery shows further impressions from the test – including channel selection in the composer, the queue view and the pricing overview.

Pricing in Detail

Across the whole pricing structure, Buffer convinces with a traceable, predictable cost development: the free entry point with up to three channels already covers the composer, AI assistant and Start Page. Essentials and Team lift the feature limits and additionally let you add more channels, user accounts and API access individually – so costs grow in proportion to actual need, not in leaps with the next package plan.

Key Alternatives

ToolAdvantage over BufferDisadvantage compared to BufferWhen it makes more sense
MetricoolMore extensive analytics and competitor analysis already in the Free planLinkedIn and X not usable in the Free plan, expansion less transparently tieredIf analytics depth matters more than LinkedIn/X connectivity
PublerAffordable ambassador partner program, LinkedIn included in the Free planX not usable in the Free planIf X is not a relevant channel
HootsuiteMore extensive team and approval featuresNo permanently usable free plan, price jumps less granularFor larger teams with a fixed budget

Our Verdict on Buffer

In our test, Buffer convinces above all through its transparent scalability: channels, user accounts and API access can be added individually and traceably instead of forcing you into a new package plan at every growth step. Composer, AI assistant, community inbox and Start Page work reliably, and the paid plans add deeper analytics that can tip the balance for data-driven editorial teams. If you value predictable, transparent growth without switching vendors, Buffer is one of the fairest options on the market.
