What is Brevo?

Brevo is a cloud-based platform for email marketing, transactional sending, SMS/WhatsApp campaigns, marketing automation and an integrated CRM. The company was founded in 2012 in Paris under the name Sendinblue and has traded as Brevo since 2023.

Unlike pure newsletter tools, Brevo covers both classic marketing campaigns and the technical delivery of individual system emails via an API, both running in the same interface and sharing the same daily quota.

Core Features of Brevo

  • Campaign editor – drag-and-drop builder with blocks for text, image, button, product and navigation, including an AI writing assistant right inside the text block.
  • Transactional email API – sends individual system emails via API/SMTP, with its own real-time and statistics view.
  • Marketing automation – visual workflow builder including an AI sentence-to-automation assistant.
  • Contact management & CRM – lists, segments, deal pipelines.
  • Forms & landing pages – signup, unsubscribe and profile-update forms free to use, landing pages paid.
  • SMS and WhatsApp campaigns – additional channels alongside email, paid add-ons.

Advantages of Brevo

  • Generous daily quota on the free plan, enough for smaller projects without a dedicated newsletter list.
  • One tool for marketing campaigns and technical transactional sending at once, no need to maintain two systems.
  • Guided four-step wizard with a live inbox preview removes much of the guesswork from building a campaign.
  • AI writing assistant built into the editor (rephrase, shorten, translate, generate new text).

Who Should Use Brevo?

Brevo suits businesses that need email sending as technical infrastructure, not just as a newsletter tool.

Small businesses and solo operators → want automated system emails (confirmations, reminders, notifications) without running their own mail server infrastructure → the free plan usually covers this completely.

E-commerce and SaaS providers → need reliable transactional emails plus occasional marketing campaigns from a single tool → worth it from the entry-level plan once the free quota stops being enough.

Growing teams → want to move into marketing automation and multi-channel campaigns (SMS, WhatsApp) over time → the higher tiers build directly on the same setup, so switching tools later isn’t necessary.

Less suitable for teams that need fully disable-able tracking, for pure landing-page projects without email sending, and for anyone expecting a dedicated sending domain with no extra setup step.

Strengths

✅ Generous daily quota on the free plan
✅ One tool for both marketing and transactional sending
✅ AI writing assistant and live inbox preview built into the editor

Weaknesses

⚠️ Open and click tracking cannot be fully disabled, only anonymised
⚠️ Without an authenticated sending domain, the editor shows a persistent deliverability warning
⚠️ Automation depth and behaviour at high sending volumes weren’t fully testable in a short hands-on trial

Our Experience with Brevo

We already run Brevo in production at Delavo as the sending relay for our “Recommend a tool” feature, not a throwaway test account but a real live workload. On top of that, we walked through the classic campaign flow in the same free-plan account without triggering an actual send.

Step 1: Keeping an eye on the free-plan quota

Brevo constantly shows the remaining daily quota in the top bar – 300 emails in our case, resetting every day. For a pure transactional feature like our recommendation email, that’s comfortably enough.

Screenshot: free-plan quota always visible in the header

Step 2: Creating a campaign

Creating a campaign starts with a choice between a classic one-off campaign and an AI-driven automation. Inside the one-off campaign flow, the channel selection opens next.

Step 3: Free-plan limits are visible right away

Of the standard channels, only email is usable on the free plan without a crown icon – SMS, WhatsApp, push and pop-up are paid add-ons. Landing pages are also locked on the free plan and immediately open an upgrade offer.

Step 4: The guided four-step wizard

Instead of one long form, Brevo walks you through four clearly ticked-off points: sender, recipients, subject and design. Each point can be opened and edited independently.

Step 5: Subject line with a live inbox preview

The subject line and preview text are shown next to a mocked-up phone inbox, which removes much of the guesswork about how the email will look once it lands.

Step 6: AI writing assistant in the drag-and-drop editor

In the design step, every text block carries an AI writing assistant with options to rephrase, fix errors, shorten or generate new text, right inside the editor with no tool switching.

Step 7: A look at our own live template

Our “recommend a tool” feature runs on a dedicated Brevo template triggered via the API. In the template editor, sender, subject line and the per-template tracking setting can all be reviewed and adjusted.

Step 8: Turning on anonymised tracking

In the account settings, open and click tracking can be anonymised so it’s no longer tied to individual contacts. It can’t be fully switched off this way, though – Brevo explicitly says so when you save the setting.

Pricing in Detail

For pure transactional sending at a smaller scale, the free plan already delivers full functionality with no upgrade in sight. Once marketing automation, multi-channel campaigns or a higher daily volume are needed, the paid tiers put the extra spend directly into new capability rather than just higher limits.

Key Alternatives

ToolAdvantage over BrevoDisadvantage vs. BrevoWhen it makes more sense
ActiveCampaignDeeper marketing automation and CRM pipelinesNo permanent free quota, pricier to start withWhen automation is the priority, not transactional sending
MailchimpLarger template and integration selectionFree plan has no transactional API, tighter contact limitFor a pure newsletter focus without system emails

ROI Calculation: When Does Brevo Pay Off?

Simplified example, without guarantee: if you currently send system emails manually through your own mail server and budget developer time for deliverability, bounce handling and reporting, the free Brevo quota tends to pay for itself after just a few hours of saved maintenance time per month, since the free plan itself costs nothing. Once the daily quota is regularly maxed out, the entry-level paid plan typically pays for itself through the time saved compared with a self-hosted setup.

Our Verdict on Brevo

Brevo convinces wherever marketing and transactional sending need to come from one place: the free plan is generous, the editor well guided, and the AI writing assistant a genuine time-saver. If you need fully disable-able tracking or a sending domain that’s ready to go with no extra step, plan for that in advance.

Privacy

Brevo processes contact and sending data as a data processor. Open and click tracking can be anonymised but not fully turned off, which is worth keeping in mind when using transactional system emails. According to Brevo’s help center, its servers are located exclusively in the EU: at OVH in France and Germany, plus Google Cloud in Belgium. Read the data processing agreement yourself before signing it and check that it fits your use case.

How much does Brevo cost?

Brevo offers a free entry plan plus several paid tiers with growing feature sets. You’ll find current terms in the pricing table above.

Who is Brevo best suited for?

Brevo works best for small businesses, e-commerce and SaaS providers who want transactional emails and occasional marketing campaigns from one tool. See the “Who Should Use Brevo?” section above for details.

Can I use Brevo for free?

Yes, the free plan offers a daily email quota with no credit card required. For pure transactional sending on smaller projects, that’s usually enough on a permanent basis.

Can tracking be turned off in Brevo emails?

No, open and click tracking can only be anonymised, not fully disabled. Brevo explicitly points this out when you turn on anonymisation.

What’s the difference between marketing and transactional emails in Brevo?

Marketing campaigns are sent to lists or segments through the campaign editor, while transactional emails are triggered individually via the API. Both sending paths share the same daily quota on the free plan.

What are the alternatives to Brevo?

Well-known alternatives include ActiveCampaign for deeper marketing automation and Mailchimp for pure newsletter marketing. See the “Key Alternatives” section above for a detailed comparison.

Does Brevo need its own sending domain?

It isn’t strictly required, but without an authenticated own domain the editor shows a persistent deliverability warning. For production use, setting up SPF and DKIM on your own domain is recommended.

Can Brevo be used in a GDPR-compliant way?

Brevo offers a data processing agreement and lets you anonymise tracking. You should still confirm the server location and exact contract terms yourself before going into production.

Can I also send SMS and WhatsApp with Brevo?

Yes, SMS and WhatsApp campaigns are available as additional channels, though they’re paid add-ons on the free plan. In the campaign editor, they’re marked with a crown icon accordingly.

How many contacts can I manage in Brevo?

The contact limit depends on the plan you choose and is separate from the daily email sending quota. Current figures are listed directly in the pricing table above.
