What Is Anara?

Anara (Anara Labs, Inc.) is a platform where you collect documents in folders, question them in a chat and add web research. The provider’s promise: every statement is backed by the exact source passage so you can check it quickly.

It also offers integrations with reference managers such as Zotero and Mendeley, notes, reusable skills and an agent for longer research tasks. Anara targets researchers, students and professionals who work with many sources.

Our verdict in brief after testing: 7.6 out of 10 points. Citation navigation is the strongest feature; deductions apply for the opaque free quota and data protection with US service providers. To the full rating →

Core Features of Anara

  • Document chat with citations: answers contain numbered references that highlight the matching passage in the original.
  • Web research: the web toggle lets Anara search the internet as well and name the sources it used.
  • Folders and library: files can be bundled and queried together; paid plans allow several people to work in one folder.
  • Integrations: the overview lists 33 connections, including Zotero and Mendeley; others such as PubMed or Google Drive depend on the plan.
  • Skills and notes: five ready-made skills, for example for citation styles, data analysis and Word and PowerPoint documents, plus custom skills.
  • Model choice: by default “Auto” picks the model; individual models are tied to paid plans.

According to the provider, deep search and the AI model council belong to the Max plan; we did not test these features.

Advantages of Anara

  • Citations can be checked in the original with one click; the references we checked led to the matching passage.
  • Document chat, web research and reference-manager integration work in one interface.
  • The free plan works without a credit card and includes Zotero and Mendeley.
  • Anara shows its working steps, for instance whether the library or the web was searched.
  • The Trust Center lists certifications such as SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001.

Who Should Use Anara?

Anara suits anyone who has to back up statements from documents instead of simply trusting an answer.

Students and researchers work with many PDFs and papers. Document chat and citation navigation save the search for the reference, and Zotero and Mendeley can be connected even on the free plan.

Analysts and consultants evaluate reports and studies and must be able to prove every figure. For them the combination of document citations and web research is the core benefit; with heavy use, Pro is worth a look.

Editorial and content teams use Anara for fact checks and briefings based on their own material. It is important to verify web results even though sources are named.

Less suitable if data must not leave the EU, because all subprocessors listed are based in the US. It is also a poor fit if you want quick text without checking sources.

Our Experience with Anara

We tested Anara on 29 September 2026 with a newly registered free account, without a credit card and without upgrading. The test material was an inventory of delavo.de, which we uploaded as a PDF. The interface started in German and switched to English at times after a reload, so the screenshots show both languages.

Step 1: Onboarding and start screen

After sign-up Anara asks two short questions about purpose and referral source; both can be skipped. You then land in a workspace with a sidebar for folders, chats, library and search. The welcome chat describes the goal of backing statements with the source passage.

Step 2: Creating a folder and the task checklist

We created the folder “Delavo – AI Tools Research”. At the bottom left Anara shows a checklist of five tasks; according to the provider, completing all of them earns a discount on a paid plan. We did not check the conditions.

Screenshot: empty folder with upload options and onboarding checklist

Step 3: Uploading a document

The four-page test document opened in the viewer straight after upload. For the free plan the provider states up to 20 MB or 120 pages per upload, which we did not push to the limit. We did not test DOCX import and used a PDF instead.

Step 4: Asking the document a question

We asked how many tools Delavo names according to the document and how many the comparison table contains. After roughly ten seconds the correct answer arrived: 44 according to the website, 45 in the table, each with numbered citations. Anara also noticed that the document states the discrepancy itself.

Step 5: Checking citations in the original

Clicking a citation opens the document and highlights the quoted passage. Checking therefore takes seconds instead of minutes. This is the core feature and it convinced us, although we only spot-checked a few citations.

Step 6: Web research

With the web toggle switched on, we asked for three reliable sources on GDPR risks of cloud AI tools. Anara worked through six visible steps and returned two opinions from European data-protection bodies (EDPB, CNIL) and one journal article. On checking, we found that the article’s authors were named as “publisher” and some conclusions did not appear in the source.

Step 7: Usage limit on the free plan

After the upload and the first document question, the “daily usage quota” display showed 10 %. The limit resets the next day at 09:00 (CEST). Anara gives no concrete figures for messages or tokens, which makes planning harder.

Step 8: Model choice and paywalls

On the free plan “Auto” is set. GPT 5.6 Terra is marked “Pro”, Opus 5.5 “Max”, and under “More models” further models follow with Pro or Max labels. One oddity: the pricing page lists GPT 6 Sol and Opus 5.5 under the Pro plan, whereas in the app both carry the Max label. What that means in practice is not documented.

Step 9: Integrations

The integrations overview lists 33 connections. Zotero and Mendeley are available without a Plus label, while PubMed, Benchling or Synapse carry the Plus label. We did not connect anything because that would require an account with the respective service.

Screenshot: integrations with Zotero, Mendeley and Plus connections

Step 10: Data protection and Trust Center

The Trust Center lists GDPR, SOC 2 Type II, SOC 2 Type I and ISO 27001 as “Compliant” and HIPAA as “In Progress”. It names Anthropic, OpenAI, Google Gemini, Stripe, Vercel and PostHog as subprocessors, all located in the US. More in the privacy section below.

You can follow steps 1 to 7 on the free plan without a credit card; the model choice from step 8 requires a paid plan.

Pricing in Detail

The free plan works without a credit card and includes document chat, web research and Zotero and Mendeley. Its limits are a daily quota without a stated figure and uploads of up to 20 MB or 120 pages.

Plus raises the usage limits, allows top-up credits and opens databases such as PubMed. Pro brings four times the usage of Plus, more models, text extraction for scans and integrations such as Google Drive or Notion.

Max comes in two tiers with five or twenty times the usage of Pro and adds deep search, AI model council and unlimited uploads. We did not test these features; they rely on the provider’s statements.

With annual billing the monthly amount is lower than with monthly payment. Enterprise is a custom offer; the current amounts for the other plans are in the pricing table above.

Our Verdict on Anara

Anara is strong for anyone who has to back up statements: citation navigation in the original worked quickly and transparently in our test. Weaknesses lie in the opaque free quota, the paywall for models and data protection with US providers.

With 7.6 out of 10 points Anara is a clear recommendation for research that needs verification, but no substitute for your own source checking.

Our tip: start with the free plan and upload a PDF of your own so you can check the citations yourself. If the daily limit is not enough, Plus is the next step; Pro pays off with many large documents or scanned material.

Privacy at Anara

The operator is Anara Labs, Inc. (USA). According to the Trust Center, Anara uses Anthropic, OpenAI, Google Gemini, Stripe, Vercel and PostHog as subprocessors, all located in the US; we did not find any EU data hosting.

The privacy policy (as of June 2026) lists internal quality control and model training among the purposes of use. An explicit ban on using data to train general AI models appears there for Google Workspace data; service providers may not use data for training according to the text. We did not find an equivalent commitment for uploaded files.

Anara states that it safeguards transfers to third countries with, among other things, EU standard contractual clauses; the policy names no fixed retention periods. These points are to be viewed more critically within the EU than outside the EU (GDPR). For sensitive or personal data, ask the provider directly and consult a qualified data-protection professional if needed.
